Historic Freediving Event in Amed, Bali: November 2019 Deep Week!
Well, ladies and gentlemen of the underwater world, it’s official; November 2019 Deep Week was the largest non-competitive freediving event in history. This remarkable gathering took place in the serene fishing town of Amed, located in East Bali.
What is Deep Week in Amed, Bali?
For those unfamiliar with Deep Week, it’s a congregation of freediving students, instructors, and celebrities who converge on one location several times a year. The event provides an opportunity to hang out, train, dive, and learn from each other, all while enjoying the stunning underwater world of Amed, Bali.
Led by Adam Stern: The Rise of Deep Week
Headed by Australian freediving champion Adam Stern, Deep Week has gained immense popularity, with November's event being the largest yet. With 111 students, 67 instructors, and four freediving celebrities, it truly was a celebration of freediving excellence, meticulously organized by the Apneista and Blue Earth Village teams in Amed.
Smooth Sailing at Deep Week: Ideal Conditions in Bali
The November Deep Week unfolded seamlessly, with no incidents to report. The safety crew enjoyed a relaxing week, sunbathing on paddleboards while engaging in discussions on quantum physics and Machiavelli. Jemeluk Bay in Amed offered ideal diving conditions with visibility between 20 and 30 meters and water temperatures around 30°C. November is a great time to dive in Amed as the water is warm and visibility remains perfect before the rainy season.
Freeding Stars in Amed: Learning from the Best
Joining Adam Stern was New Zealand’s freediving legend and 102-meter Dynamic No-Fins world record holder, William Trubridge, who conducted workshops on No-Fins technique, maximizing MDR and lung volume, and equalization. His presence in Amed was a highlight, offering invaluable learning experiences.
The event also hosted Ukrainian world record holder Natalia Zharkova, who led workshops in bi-fins technique, training programs, diet, and equalization. Molchanovs pro instructor Vitomir Maricic was also present, helping attendees solve their challenges throughout the week. A big thanks to all these freediving icons for sharing their expertise in Amed, Bali.
Unforgettable Encounters and Adventures in Bali
Among the many highlights was a boat dive where lucky students encountered a mola mola and a pod of dolphins. Equally impressive was Adam Stern’s fin rescue in Jemeluk Bay. The wreck diving in Amed continued to awe participants, as they explored East Bali's underwater treasures, including Amed’s newest wreck.
Training Facilities in Amed, Bali: Enhancing the Deep Week Experience
The lap pool and static pool at Blue Earth Village were open for Deep Week participants, providing excellent facilities for training and testing themselves in pool disciplines. Coupled with yoga, CrossFit, and meditation sessions, Deep Week offered a holistic experience of freediving and personal growth in Amed, Bali.
